SUSTAINABLY BLUE MALTA - future thinking
Innovators are educators.
At Sustainably Blue Malta we look to adjusting the existing knowledge gap, encourage new thought processes and adaptation to new techniques and new thinking, in order to help achieve status as one of Southern Europe’s most sustainable and zero carbon friendly countries. The built environment is collectively responsible globally for an estimated 40% of energy consumption, 25% of water, 40% of global resources and one third of global greenhouse gas emissions [1].
MJC Gray is the chief founder of Sustainably Blue Malta. With a Masters in Sustainable Architecture in the Built Environment, the driving force behind the site is to bring people together in Malta to provide answers to questions, to try to tackle the externalities being created by the current boom in the construction industry, and to help provide inspirations and discussion points for those concerned about sustainability in the islands. How can we tackle the issues of public health and safety and promote and consolidate more sustainable attitudes towards a greener construction sector and environment from the grass roots up rather than through top down funded programmes that have little lasting impact?
This is a time of great transition for the European construction sector towards attaining energy efficient and nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB)[2]. Malta, as in other Southern European countries, in addition to the economic challenges, faces other important factors that hinder the renovation of existing residential building stock and newly constructed high performance buildings [3].
Malta, being of such small proportions as an island economy, needs to manage such challenges and set a standard for the rest of the region towards efficient and low carbon/low energy consuming buildings. With a rapidly expanding construction sector, there is a pressing need to promote new green buildings standards, thoughts and outlook towards a healthier and better standard of living.
If you feel strongly about any of the issues mentioned here, please, feel free to contact us. Whether you are architect, engineer, project manager, or developer, let’s get the conversation started and create a better more sustainable built environment towards a low ”nearly zero” - carbon Malta.
